Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
